News on ASFN courtesy call to Union Minister of Myanmar

ASFN courtesy call to Union Minister U Win Tun, Union Minister of Environmental Conservation and Forestry, 2 Deputy Ministers (U Aye Myint  Maung and Dr Thet Thet Zin), Director General of Forest Department Dr Nyi Nyi Kyaw and Director General of Planning and Statistic Department U Tin Tun on 27th August has been mentioned in all state newspaper and national TV program.  Photo of one of newspaper published the news is attached. 

It’s stated that "ASFN and its implementing partners paid a courtesy call to Union Minister U Win Tun in the meeting of Union Minister's office at 10:00 am on 27th August 2013.

The call was attended by deputy ministers, head of departments under MOECAF, ASFCC adviser Dr Doris Capistrano, representatives from CIFOR, ICRAF and RECOFTC.

The members of the delegation presented their current works and potential area of collaboration in Myanmar.  It was also discussed current activities being carried out by RECOFTC under ASFN umbrella in Myanmar.

The Minister explained land use policy and land use plan that the ministry is currently leading in implementation.  Recently the government excluded area of local villages with more than 50 household living in the reserved forests for a number of years from forest reserved area and allowed them to use existing paddy land and other cropping land.  For the cropping land, the government will recognize the land use right of local people if they manage and use those lands under the Community Forestry Management regime by integrating agro-forestry system to promote livelihood options for local people.  More detailed discussions were made to collaborate with the above international organizations to upgrade the livelihood of local people through proper design of agroforestry system, Community Forestry, and linkage to the market under the framework of green economy and climate change adaptation and mitigation."
